Background of the Study
Diabetes mellitus is a growing public health concern, particularly among elderly populations who face an increased risk of complications such as neuropathy, cardiovascular disease, and kidney failure (WHO, 2024). Nurses play a crucial role in diabetes management, providing patient education, monitoring blood glucose levels, and assisting in lifestyle modifications (Jones et al., 2023). The effectiveness of nursing interventions varies across healthcare settings, influenced by institutional policies, resource availability, and professional training.
In Bauchi State, both government and private hospitals cater to elderly diabetes patients, yet disparities in the role and effectiveness of nursing care remain largely unexplored. Government hospitals often have higher patient loads and limited resources, whereas private hospitals may offer specialized care but at higher costs (Abdullahi & Musa, 2024). Understanding how these factors influence nursing roles and diabetes management is essential for improving patient outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of nurses in diabetes care, inconsistencies in nursing practices across healthcare settings may affect patient outcomes (Williams et al., 2024). In government hospitals, nurses often handle large patient volumes, potentially leading to reduced time for individualized care and patient education. Conversely, private hospitals may have better resources but may not always cater to lower-income patients who need quality diabetes care (Adebayo & Umar, 2023). There is a need for an evidence-based comparative analysis to determine how these differences affect diabetes management in elderly patients.
